Archaeological Field Technician

Southern Ontario
$22.00 – $30.00 per hour

Archaeological Consultants Canada is seeking field technicians with previous experience to join our team. Compensation is above market rate and directly correlated to experience level.

Work weeks are Monday to Friday, with 8 hour days on site. Benefits and equipment/gear allowances are offered.

Opportunities for report writing, lab work, and winter work are possible, as well as support in applying for A, R, and P licences.

Access to reliable transportation is required.

As an archaeological field technician, you will be responsible for various fieldwork duties under the supervision of your Field Director. These duties will be related to archaeological assessments and excavations, inclusive of shovel test pit survey, pedestrian survey in remote or rough terrain, test unit excavation and efforts related to block excavation.

A working knowledge of archaeological materials and methodologies is required for this position. Applicants must be able to identify Indigenous artifacts, including pottery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (e.g. hand shovelling, trowelling);
  • Be capable of repetitive movement related to shovelling and screening soil;
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs.;
  • Work outdoors for 8 to 10 hours at a time;
  • Work in and traverse rough terrain as necessary;
  • Work in harsh elements (e.g. hot and cold temperatures, light rain);
  • Work in remote locations;
  • Reliably identify archaeological resources, including lithics and Indigenous pottery; and,
  • Ability to work well as part of a team or independently as required.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field is an asset.
  • At least one year of previous archaeological field experience is required.
